With the completion of the MDG campaign in 2015, new targets are being set for 2030 under the Sustainable Development Goals marketing campaign. Maternal health is positioned beneath Goal three, Health, with the goal being to reduce the worldwide maternal mortality ratio to lower than 70. Amongst instruments being developed to fulfill these targets is the WHO Safe Childbirth Checklist. In response to this the National Institutes of Health created the Office of Research on Women’s Health in 1990 to address these inequities. In 1993 the National Institutes of Health Revitalisation Act formally reversed US coverage by requiring NIH funded section III medical trials to incorporate women.
